Lake St Clair’s Fly Fishing
Come fish Lake St Clair and experience some of the best fly fishing in the
world, for
trophy smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white bass,
pike, musky, and carp
right in the Detroit Michigan area. World
renowned for it's abundance of trophy sized fish, Lake St. Clair  is quickly
gaining a reputation as the worlds best fishery for smallmouth bass and
musky. In the Dec/Nov 2004 issue of American Angler Lake St Clair was
listed as one of the top 100 most amazing fly fishing destinations in the
world with Capt Steve's guide service prominently listed at the top! In his
book, Michigan Blue-Ribbon Fly-Fishing Guide, Bob Linsenman wrote "
Lake St. Clair is probably the best angling lake in an urban area on the
planet."  Bob has been out on the water with us a number of times. Lake St
Clair is one of the few areas in the world where you have the opportunity to
effectively target musky, carp, pike, and smallmouth bass all in the same
area. Lake St Clair has an area of 420 square miles of prime fishing
habitat. At the North end of the lake where the St Clair River empties into
Lake St Clair it is the worlds largest fresh water delta. The delta includes a
vast expanse of beautiful secluded sand flats of crystal clear water that
remind many customers of areas in the Florida Keys. Who says you have
to spend money on gas and hotels to drive all the way up to Northern
Michigan to experience quality
fly fishing.
The Boat
We use a Scout 177 Florida Style Flats boat with a 115hp Yamaha
Saltwater series motor. The Scout makes it easy to effectively and safely
cover every type of water Lake St Clair has to offer. Whether it be the
shallow flats or open water on the main lake. The Scout is equipped with a
Minn Kota Riptide electric motor with the Copilot Remote Control system
and state of the art Humminbird 787c2 GPS/fish finder combo. These are
the two best components we have ever used! The Scout is also outfiited
with a 4’ poling  platform and an 18’ Gloomis graphite push pole. This
allows us to silently pole through the endless shallow sand flats site
casting to smallmouth bass and carp. The extra height of the platform
allows the guide to spot fish in the shallow flats at a much further distance
before sneaking up on them for you to make a cast.
Fly Fishing For Smallmouth Bass
Lake St. Clair smallmouth bass have attracted much national attention
and for good reason. Lake St. Clair is perhaps one of the finest
destinations for
smallmouth bass in the country. Many of the lakes
smallmouth and largemouth bass exceed 5 pounds and 30-50 fish days
are common. Featured on ESPN outdoors, the lake has 2 pro bass
circuits each year. Largemouth and smallmouth will readily take a fly on
St. Clair and are great fighters on the fly rod, with the hard fighting
smallmouth bass being our favorite target. The Detroit River also an
excellent run of
white bass. The Michigan DNR is now allowing an early
catch and immediate release season which starts on the last Saturday in
April. This gives us an additional month and a half of phenomenal fly
fishing for bass when they are in the expansive shallow flats. Lake St Clair’
s smallmouth bass fishing is great all season long from early May through
November. The prime dates for fly fishing for bass in the shallow sand
flats in May and June are filling quickly.

Fly Fishing For Carp
The fly fishing for carp on the Lake St. Clair flats is outstanding. Come
join us for sight fishing these hard fighting “golden bonefish” on the fly
while casting from the flats boat. Find out and experience why
carp are
the #1 game fish in Europe and why the craze for this misunderstood fish
is catching on here in the U.S.A. All of our carp fishing is done by site
casting in shallow water. Very much like bone fishing but much closer.
Also join us on some of our inland Michigan lakes and rivers for some
phenomenal carp action with fish up to 25-30lbs!

Fly Fishing For Musky
Lake St Clair has more musky per square mile than any other lake. At
420 square miles it is estimated that there are around 50,000 muskie
over 30 inches with many fish caught each year exceeding 50”. It was
once thought of as the fish of 10,000 casts. Come witness and learn the
new musky fly fishing techniques and tactics that Captain Steve Kunnath
has developed that destroy the old myths of this incredible trophy fish.
When casting for musky half of the fish will attack your musky flies right at
boat side only a few inches under the surface and only a few feet from
where you are standing! This can cause some heart racing excitement
you will never forget. Fly fishing for musky is the greatest experience
Lake St Clair has to offer. Captain Steve is now also offering limited spin
fishing trips for musky only. Check out the

Fly Fishing For Northern Pike
Lake St Clair gets lots of attention for its bass and muskie fishing but
many people overlook its potential as a good northern pike fishery.
Pike
up to 35-40” are common and readily take a fly.  Captain Steve Kunnath
now has specific areas that he takes customers to that produce good fly
fishing for pike  all season long. Peak times for pike are May-June and
September-November.  And while casting for northern pike there is
always a good chance of tangling with a huge muskie.
